Early Life and Training
Born in Burgundy, France, Jean-Baptiste Greuze received his early training in Lyon under the guidance of Grandon. Subsequently, he moved to Paris to study at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture.
Historical Aspirations
Inspired by ambitious dreams, Greuze initially aspired to become a historical painter. He traveled to Rome for further study, hoping to master the grand style of the past masters. However, his historical works, such as "Severus and Caracalla," met with limited success.
Return to Genre Painting
