Biography of John Updike
John Updike was an American writer, art critic, and literary scholar. He was known for his extensive body of work, which included 28 novels and 45 other books, including collections of short stories, poems, and essays. Updike was born in Reading and spent his early years in Shillington, Pennsylvania. His father was a school teacher, and his mother was a writer of short stories.
Updike graduated with honors from Harvard University in 1954, where he studied English literature. He also attended a one-year course in painting at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art at Oxford University in England. While at Harvard, Updike served as an editor for the satirical magazine "Lampoon."
